Ad executive and constant dreamer Tereasa Surratt is a master of transformation.
The Ogilvy & Mather creative director turned her flea market habit into a book and an old lakeside camp into asummer playground for her artistic friends. And her latest project, with Steppenwolf Theatre, converts a bare swath of concrete garage into a chic place to relax before or after a play.
The Steppenwolf Garage Theatre is the most intimate of the company's three performance spaces, and it's where new work by American playwrights is showcased in an edgy setting that needed a little warming up.
With a $20,000 budget and plenty of props from the theater's warehouse, Surratt and the Ogilvy team created a chock-full-of-cool, L-shaped lounge area that wraps the performance space. The lounge encourages theatergoers to linger among vintage furniture, a smorgasbord of textures (including a wall made of hundreds of scripts installed by the multitalented INDO Projectswindow dressers) and a small bar serving beer and wine.
The next time you have tickets to a Garage Theatre show, go early--and stay late.
