New life for vintage treasures

Author Tereasa Surratt’s new book, “Found, Free & Flea” (Clarkson Potter, $32.50), shows how to turn mismatched tea cups, buttons, plates and flatware into décor and entertaining tools.
Surratt boasts a diverse background: watermelon harvester, truck stop waitress, antiques dealer and interior designer. Add summer camp owner to the list; she and her husband bought a derelict one in Wisconsin to transform into a lakeside retreat. While fixing up decrepit cabins, Surratt kept stumbling across interesting objects, such as a pristine set of Fiesta Ware, mid-century aprons and board games in original packaging.
Surratt went on a five-year journey to turn these treasures into collections, using what she found, negotiated for free or discovered at a flea market.

Who’ll like this book: Those charmed by glass milk bottles, wool plaid blankets and paint-by-numbers art.

Who won’t: Those who don’t see the beauty in hand-crocheted hot pads, wooden rolling pins and Mason jars.

Words of wisdom: “Fishing lures: Not just for tackle boxes anymore. If you’re lucky enough to have a grouping of vintage lures, why hide them in a box?”

Style in a nutshell: Cabin fever cure.
